Sparks - Amateur Hour

I only got into Sparks about a year or so ago. I
downloaded a “Best Of” collection, and within the first few tracks I was utterly
smitten.
Every track bounded along effortlessly with infectious jollity, melody, &
creativity, and the lyrics (mainly about shagging girls n that) made me cackle
heartily.
One tune stands out as an absolute personal favourite, though. Amateur Hour
is pure musical Gold.
A rarely-mentioned (despite reaching the giddy heights of No.7 in the UK charts
upon release) treasure of a single that blasts from the speakers dipped in such
fun-filled brilliance that you’ll find yourself craving a second or third listen
the second it climaxes. A true hallmark of a great, timeless single.
Sod analogies and wanky in-depth analyses. This is an absolute classic tune, and
it makes me ruddy smile. If you’re yet to hear this tune, then download
it right now, and I hope it does the same for you.

WOTCHA GUYZ N GALZ!
Had a cracking night oot on Friday. Went to see sexy Kula Shaker with me mates
Lee, Eddie, and Wayne. It was a short set but we really had a laff. Few beers,
lots of chuckles, class.
Talking of live musak, the Manics gig a couple weeks back was really good. They
played a killer set-list, and unlike at the Shaker, the rest of the crowd were really getting
into it. Which was nice.
The setlist
(Cheers to Dan from my work for finding this for me)

Not too shabby, eh?
I really feel quite good at the moment. Dunno why, but it feels like I’ve
finally woken up after a lengthy period of lacking energy and direction and
really not feeling good aboot life n that.
Went through my phone last night and deleted the numbers of several twats, ugly
slags and complete non-entities I’ve somehow come to know/got saddled
with/carried over the years. People I gave time to who wasn’t even worth me
slashing on in all fairness. Two-faced gonks, users, wastes of space etc.
Felt pretty fucking good. I know who the genuine, decent people in my life are,
and they’re going nowhere (numbers wise!).
From tomorrow I’m gonna start hunting for a new job too. I’m sick of working
like a twat for hours a day in a completely dead-end job for next to nothing for
fake, slimey fucks who couldn’t care less if I was there or not in the first place. I’m
also sick of getting four buses a day to go to Wanksville to work with some of
the shittest people I’ve ever known in my life. (Bear in mind i'm talking about
2 or 3 people here. The rest are lovely!)
My mates are all getting careers, chasing dreams,
getting married, enjoying life, and I want all that. I fucking crave all
that. So I’m gonna go out and get it.
I need to get back to feeling like my old self. I used to be so upbeat and
happy-go-lucky, and i fucking miss it. I don’t wanna waste any more time, i'm
sick of wasting time and feeling down about things. So from this Monday, i begin
again. Monday is day zero.
Cheers to anyone who's ever cared about or
believed in me, I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I love you all.
To the future eh?
See you there.

During recent interviews to promote their new
album, “Send Away The Tigers”, the Manic Street Preachers have spoken
about wanting to get back to being what made them great in the first place. Big
tunes, whopping choruses, and a slap of eyeliner, to name three such factors.
They also seem to feel pretty dismissive of their past few albums. Namely,
everything released after “Everything Must Go”. Whilst I kinda emphasise
and understand what they mean by trying to reclaim that old spirit, that old
drive, I can’t say I fully agree with them on their critique of their more
recent studio efforts.
I mean, “This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours” is admittedly a bit bloated and
uninspired in places, yet it still boasts a killer trio of tunes in “The
Everlasting”, “Tsunami”, and “If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be
Next”.
2000‘s follow-up, “Know Your Enemy” was again, a tad bloated and aimless,
yet still contains the majestic “Let Robeson Sing”, and the rocking
“Intravenous Agnostic”, and a handful of other decent tunes, so it’s hardly
a lost cause either.
2004's “Lifeblood” was very good, in my opinion. Really strong
throughout, if a little mid-paced. For the Manics, anyway.
So no lads, the past decade hasn’t been a total wash-out. For me,
anyway. There’s been many moments of that old greatness that made me fall in
love with the band, and in the non-album one-off single, “The Masses Against
The Classes”, a copper-bottomed classic number one single, to boot.
But anyway, the new album.

I’m glad to say I like it. I really like it. At only ten tracks and 38 minutes
long, it’s just the way I love my records, and my penis; short n sweet. Ok, it’s
not too sweet. My cock, I mean. the album is as sweet as a very fucking sweet
thing indeed.
It’s stacked with really good tunes, “I Am Just A Patsy”, “Indian Summer”,
and “Your Love Alone Is Not Enough” being my own personal stand-outs of
the moment.
It’s a big-sounding, fun record with the band firing on all cylinders, and most
importantly maybe, sounding like they’re having the time of their lives, and
enjoying being in a band again.
I’m off to see them live next month with a few mates, so I’m really looking
forward to that. The last (and only) time I caught them live was way back in
December ‘98, at Wembley Arena, so for me it’s a lonnnnnng overdue return.
(Though I did manage to see James Dean Bradfield during his solo-tour at the
Camden Koko last Winter, so I guess that sort of counts. It doesn’t, does
it).
The Manics are still the most played act on my LastFM account too, so it’s fair
to say they mean a great deal to me, and always will.
And it’s great to have them back.
Below are my 50 all-time favourites from their
glittery back-catalogue. What's good enough for Oasis is good enough for them!

So went to Chicagos in S(l)utton on Saturday
night. It’s basically a free-for-all cheesy club, and the atmosphere is always
great. Plus you’d have to be the Elephant Man not to pull in there. Not that
I indulged, of course!
Hadn’t been for about a year, so really enjoyed me ol self. Went with me mates
Disco, Wayne, Matt, Lee, Charlotte, Tash, and Tay. Was a cracking night and it
was great seeing you all. Oh, and attempting to dance with you. Really badly.
We all need to get together more often. “Get it pumped!”

Tay, Matt, Tash during boozier
times, Saturday
In other news, I’m working really hard at the moment cos my work-place is moving
to a higher-level in the building, so I’m constantly carrying ridiculously heavy
shit up three flights of stairs. Pain in the arse. Pays the bills though. Just.
Today I was painting some walls. Do I look like fucking Rolf Harris, you
spunkers?! My mate Lee does though. Just joshing, mate. Get involved!
Me mate Sonia is coming to stay at my gaff over the Easter weekend next month,
along with her daughter, Chloe. We get on great and have a laugh together, so
I’m looking forward to it. Gonna show them my area n that. So they’ll be off
after a day, probably!
By the way, does anyone know where I can nab a black 80GB Ipod and pay for it in
a few months? I sold me 30GB one a few weeks back to fund getting the new one,
but I had to spend the money on other frivolous items, like trifle. So now I’ve
either gotta save up for ages or get it on tick somewhere, so if you have any
ideas, please let me know. I miss having tuneage banging away whilst I’m slaving
away at work. A bit of Billy Ray Cyrus makes the day fly, telling ya.
Anyway, I gotta fuck orf now. Pancakes are a-calling. Take care y’all, and talk
soon.
PS Hoping to add some galleries n that to the site over the next few days. Got
loads of pics of mates & family n that that I’d like to put up, as well as
some old & new writings, a couple new reviews, & maybe a cheeky compilation
album for y'all. So much like your Mum
in Chicagos on a Saturday night, I shall get onto that ASAP.
Love yas!

Been pretty fucking busy lately, and just come

had time to update this here site lately, but yeah, I will be doing so much,
much more over the coming days & weeks, so yeah, stick aboot please, cuntos!
Luv yas really. (INSERT GRINNING FACE HERE ETC).

Right, enough fucking small-talk, on with the

Gonna blast through these from now on. No,

The Libertines - Don't Look Back Into The Sun

I fucking loved The Libs. They were the
first band since Oasis who really seemed to have it all. The passion, the drive,
the charisma, the utter unshakeable belief in what they were doing and why, and
most importantly, the tunes.
As with Oasis’ debut album, it took a while for “Up The Bracket” (The
Libs’ first) to really click with me. But once it did, it really did. I
played it every day, almost religiously. It struck a chord just when I really
needed something, anything to inspire & excite me. I was having a hard
time personally, and a morning spin of The Libs' ragged opus seemed to wash all
my worries away. It really grabbed me and hasn’t let go since.
This tune was released as a stop-gap single between “…Bracket” and their
much anticipated follow-up album “The Libertines”, yet for me it really
stands out as their greatest, most definitive moment.
Shuffling drum intro, uptempo licks from geetar-heaven, Messrs Barat & Doherty
sharing vocal-duties as only they could, and a tune bigger than that bloke who
sells the Big Issue in Kingston. And twice as sexy.
The biggest compliment I can give The Libs, is to mention the time when I went
to see ‘em at Brixton, 3 or 4 years ago.
I went with my mate Wayne, and despite him never hearing their music before, we
had an amazing time. We jumped up and down, threw our fists in the air, nodded
our drunken heads with the excitement & passion only great music can bring, and
went home with grins as wide as your Mum's thighs on our faces. I still regard
it as one of the nights of my life, and I cherish the memory.
A great single by a sorely-missed, once-in-a-lifetime band.
