The Strokes - First Impressions Of Earth

Written by Dan Franklin

Am i alone in thinking The Strokes look like complete twunts in almost every band-picture they ever put out?

No? Quality. Let's continue.

This sprightly third opus from the groomed NY trampos leaps out of the traps and straight into your startled mush from the opening bars, and proceeds to barely come up for breath for almost the entire length of it's hour duration from there on in.

Quite simply, it rocks the fucking big one, kids.

Seriously, from the moment you whop this on you'll be moshing like a two-bit hussy on Bacardi Breezers during "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" night.

One of the rare dips in sheer speed and force comes in the laid-back, sparkly form of the quite lubbly "Ask Me Anything", during which the erotically-handsome Julian Casablancas informs us that he has "nothing to say". The bad news is he's right. The good news is it really doesn't matter, as the tunes that back his whittling are so fucking ace.

If lead-off single "Juicebox" didn't quite grab you, then maybe you need to re-listen in the setting of the album, as it slots in perfectly, and might make more impact on your battered senses in this environment, where it feels far more at home, and seems to work better.

Quite simply, The Strokes have pulled off a pretty rare feat in this day & age. They've put out three very strong records in a row, and have managed to become  consistently better whilst maintaining ( and building on ) their creative edge.

This is a thrilling record to listen to, and yeah, they really do have nowt to say. But the music will knock your tits off. And seriously, what's more important?

Buy this, and cherish the sound of one of the best bands of the last decade or so hitting their frazzled, inspired prime.

Inspired, strong, fun rock music to jump about to and scream into your mate's chubby-face in ze boozer.

Is This It? Judging by this nutty record, not by a fucking long way.

Buffet Rating:

8/10

Fancy a taste? Try these:

Juicebox, On The Other Side, Ask Me Anything.
